Thailand residency & tax base

Thailand has rebuilt its long-stay options for remote entrepreneurs, investors and retirees. The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) gives you five years of validity with 180 days per entry, the Long Term Resident visa (LTR) gives you ten years, a digital work permit and an exemption for foreign income. The DTV is a multiple-entry visa valid for five years with 180 days per entry, without a work permit for Thai clients and without tax benefits. The LTR runs for ten years, includes a digital work permit and exempts foreign income from tax. In return the requirements are much higher.
A balance of at least THB 500,000 held for three months, evidence of remote work, freelancing or a soft power activity such as Muay Thai or cooking courses, proof of residence and, since August 2026, a criminal record certificate. The fee is THB 10,000.
Wealthy Global Citizen with assets of at least USD 1 million and an investment of USD 500,000 in Thailand, Wealthy Pensioner aged 50 or over with USD 80,000 passive income, Work-from-Thailand Professional for employees of established foreign companies, and Highly-Skilled Professional. Several categories accept USD 40,000 income combined with an investment or a master's degree.
The DTV is usually decided within five to fifteen business days through the e-visa portal, European embassies take two to four weeks. The LTR process at the BOI normally takes several weeks to a few months.
Anyone spending at least 180 days in Thailand in a calendar year becomes tax resident there. Foreign income is taxable once it is remitted to Thailand. LTR holders in the Wealthy Global Citizen, Wealthy Pensioner and Work-from-Thailand Professional categories are exempt.
Only remotely for foreign employers and clients. Work for Thai clients or local employment requires a work permit, which the DTV does not include.
Yes. The DTV has a dependent category for spouses and children under 20, the LTR covers up to four dependants.
